Product Description
Jeannette Walls's The Glass Castle was "nothing short of spectacular" (Entertainment Weekly). Now she brings us the story of her grandmother -- told in a voice so authentic and compelling that the book is destined to become an instant classic.

"Those old cows knew trouble was coming before we did." So begins the story of Lily Casey Smith, in Jeannette Walls's magnificent, true-life novel based on her no-nonsense, resourceful, hard working, and spectacularly compelling grandmother. By age six, Lily was helping her father break horses. At fifteen, she left home to teach in a frontier town -- riding five hundred miles on her pony, all alone, to get to her job. She learned to drive a car ("I loved cars even more than I loved horses. They didn't need to be fed if they weren't working, and they didn't leave big piles of manure all over the place") and fly a plane, and, with her husband, ran a vast ranch in Arizona. She raised two children, one of whom is Jeannette's memorable mother, Rosemary Smith Walls, unforgettably portrayed in The Glass Castle.

Lily survived tornadoes, droughts, floods, the Great Depression, and the most heartbreaking personal tragedy. She bristled at prejudice of all kinds -- against women, Native Americans, and anyone else who didn't fit the mold. Half Broke Horses is Laura Ingalls Wilder for adults, as riveting and dramatic as Isak Dinesen's Out of Africa or Beryl Markham's West with the Night. It will transfix readers everywhere.

Loved it. Finished in two days. Couldn't stop reading . . . now I have to try and tackle all of the resulting backed up laundry and dishes . . .

When I read The Glass Castle I loved it. I could feel the author reliving the stories and I couldn't wait until Half Broke Horses was released. I was not disappointed when it arrived. The story line in this book is a lighter fare than the previous book but will hold you throughout. The writing style of Jeannette Walls is easy to fall in step with and is very hard to put down. I was captivated by the first chapter and have enjoyed it till the end. Ms. Walls made a great career choice when she decided to write full time. When is the next book coming out I want to preorder.

Enjoyed the book, being from this area myself and living in the last of the great depression I could associate with the heroine. And being envolved with horses most of my life, I can believe what the book is all about.

5 out of 5 stars Just a great read!   June 27, 2010

Having read The Glass Castle, I was eager to read Halfbroke Horses -- and, I wasn't disappointed. Jeannette Walls knows how to write a good novel.

One thing I really appreciate about this book is the short segments, all written with an exciting bit of action and ending with the wonderment of what will come next. Sometimes what does come next is so very unexpected and dramatic. Other times it's comedy at its best.

I loved the book and look forward to sharing comments with my bookclub next year. Couldn't wait til next year to read it!

I read this book and it was excellent so I ordered two of them as gifts for friends. There is nothing more enjoyable than receiving a book that somebody else recommends.
